Mini-Masters: VPRD plans kids' putt-putt tourney, Aug. 13

This is the last week to sign up for the Mini Masters Mini Golf Tournament to take place on Saturday, August 13th from 2pm – 4pm at the Vinton Skate and Activity Center.  The tournament is open to children in grades K-6th (2015/16 school year).  The cost is $5.  Come out and try to see if you can be crowned the Champion of

Center Point Friends Concocting Minion Party

A scheme has been brewed to hold a Minion Party Saturday, Sept.24, to benefit the Center Point Andersen Public Library. At its August meeting Friends of the Library set the party in the Library community room from 1 to 3. Cost is $7 for kids and $3 for adults who must accompany them. Paid reservations are due by Friday, Sept. 16. They can be made at the Library or by mailing names, phone number and check to: Friends of the Center Point Library, Box 54, Center Point IA 52213.

Boomfest schedule includes vendors, music

More than 75 vendors have signed up for the annual Boomfest in downtown Vinton on Saturday, Aug. 27. The booths will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along 4th Street.  Free inflatable activities for children will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entertainment also includes music by Zachary Freedom. Local emergency response vehicles will also be on display.

Beats, Burgers, Brats, Beer and Bicycles in Dysart August 20

On August 20, Dysart will celebrate our annual 5 B’s Event! (Beats, burgers, brats, beer and bicycles). This family friendly event is held each year on Dysart’s Main Street in support of the Old Creamery Nature Trail. The event starts with a bike ride on the Old Creamery Nature Trail, starting in Vinton at 12:00 p.m., noon, at the Vinton Trailhead, riding to Garrison for a beverage break and continues to the event in Dysart.

Iowa State Fair Honors Veterans

On Monday, August 15, the Iowa State Fair will honor active and retired military throughout the day with discounted gate admission, special displays and a parade on the Grand Concourse. On Veterans' Day, August 15, active and retired members of the military with a military I.D. and their spouses will receive $8 gate admission from 7 a.m.

Cooking, not dancing: Salsa contest returns to Farmers Market

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department and the Vinton Farmers Market will once again host its annual Salsa Contest on Thursday, August 11th. For those interested in participating, there is no fee for entry and no pre-registration is required.   The rules of the contest are simple: 1. Individuals may enter one OR both types of salsa 2.

American Legion to hold Fish Fry August 12

Friday, August 12, from 4-7 p.m. the American Legion will hold their FIsh Fry. The Legion is located at 105 R Ave. in Vinton. The menu will include: Fish Fillet, Baked Potato, Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Baked Beans and Cake Adults: $8.00 Children 5 to 12: $4.00 Children under 5: Free All you can eat while supplies last. The Bar will be open.

Canoeing event to teach basics as well as safety

Join the county naturalist for some canoeing fun at  Hannen Lake and Rodgers Park. We will go over some basic canoeing tips and safety then get out on the water for some practice, a game, and free paddling. This is a free event. Honor Flight fund-raiser to include plane-pulling, flights for kids

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flights organization is welcoming all area residents to a unique fund-raising event this Saturday, Aug. 6. This exciting new family-friendly event will include a plane pulling contest, plane rides from the Young Eagles, static displays from our military and emergency services, fighter plane from University of Iowa, climbing wall from the National Guard, food and drink for purchase, and the opportunity to meet and thank some of our brave Veterans.
